International experiences always drew me since I was a child. My family often traveled internationally, but traveling internationally is not quite the same as really having an international experience.
My first international experience was when I applied for an exchange program and was accepted. What’s curious about this is that I was only 11. How in the world did I convince my parents to let me go alone in an exchange program at age 11, right?
That experience definitely changed my life, and I wanted more of it. I wanted to understand more about different cultures, different points of view, histories, and stories. Yes! So fascinating.
During the course of the years, I encountered different types of leaders, many also with plenty of international experiences. But somehow, some were different than others. I noticed these differences and decided to coin the term 3i global leader because some of them had 3 specific traits that started with “I,” and some didn’t.
What is the 3i global leader?
Simply put, the 3i global leader is a term coined to define leaders with international reach, experiences, relationships, and a particular set of traits. These traits are: being impactful, influential, and inclusive. Interestingly, they were present in global leaders that were charismatic, highly approachable, and extremely successful.
Why being a 3i global leader matter?
Leaders that can be perceived as 3i global leaders are frequently more successful, but if that alone were the excuse to paying attention to this, I would not even be here trying.
What’s noticeable about 3i global leaders is that they create an environment of trust and happiness around them. And they are happier themselves too. If you’ve heard of the “happiness factor,” you probably know this: happy people “infect” others that also feel happier, who then infect others, and so on. So being a 3i global leader has an unbelievable multiplier effect.
Can this be learned?
I was yesterday watching a speech given by Olivia Fox about Charisma. A fascinating video that I recommend. There, she clearly says that some are born with higher charisma, but studies show that charisma can be acquired.
In the same sense, some people already possess what it takes to be a 3i global leader, but becoming one – like charisma – is also something you can achieve by practicing, acquiring a specific skill set, and gaining experiences with greater international exposure.
How to become a 3i global leader?
The best way to become a 3i global leader is by focusing on learning and gaining experiences on the 4 pillars of success of the 3i global leader:
- Pillar 1 – Personal Leadership: the art of managing your self-discipline, your internal dialogue, and self-care in ways that make you more productive and conducive to high efficacy in every activity.
- Pillar 2 – People Leadership: the art of building trust and strong relationships in ways that create higher performance and effective work for everyone involved.
- Pillar 3 – Organizational Leadership: the art of leveraging information and processes to build strong business foundations that reflects customer satisfaction, employee engagement, financial income and provides consistent value to shareholders.
- Pillar 4 – Cultural Leadership: the art of driving cultural values in your environment that are inclusive in ways that make everyone feel comfortable and empowered to be authentic.
